Our horses > Newz > August 11, 2007OTTBS Attend the Hard Away Whitworth Hunter PaceFive Bits & Bytes Farm horses made the hot trip down to Greensboro, AL for the Hard Away Whitworth hunt pace and hound show last weekend. Barry rode one of his special horses, Era of Chanago, Elizabeth took her boy, Political Pull. Dr. Nancy Woodruff rode Dream Pusher for the first time out of the arena. We brought along Pride of the Fox for our friend Bob Goodman to ride. Bob's wife Dr. Susan Llewallyn Goodman brought along Political Pull's full sister Most Always a Lady aka "Honeymoon". Brave ThoroughbredsThe hunter pace was sent in the beautiful Alabama country side that is home to many catfish farming ponds. Our ride consisted of open pastures, dams, woods and inviting hunt panels and gates. What should have been the most spooky thing were the aerators in the ponds. They did not scare our Thoroughbreds! These big machines churn water up to ten feet in the air while making a lot of splashing noise. Not one of our Thoroughbreds reacted in any way. Another good test of the saneness of our Thoroughbreds was when the Hard Away Whitworth hounds were paraded to the pond for a swim. At least 30 couple (60 hounds) went within fifteen feet of our horses and not one of them reacted in a negative way. Political Pull was most fascinated and followed the hounds up the driveway to see where they were going.
New Friends and Old FriendsHunter paces are a great way to school a young horse and make new friends at the same time. We took our time around the course as the temperatures were heading towards the record high of 103 degrees that was reached later that day.
We had our vet friend Dr. Susan Llewallyn watching to make sure the horses were doing well. The horses had electrolytes and lots of water and they were hosed down halfway through the ride. Susan's husband, Bob, borrowed Pride of the Fox for the day.
After the ride we attended the hound show judged by Bob Walker who is the husband of the kennels huntsman Mary Walker. They were staff at the Shamrock Hounds hunt when Elizabeth, Barry and Susan were members. We were joined this weekend by Bob Walker's daughter Bernie Walker and three other old friends from the fox hunt: Karen Komadowski, Meredith Evans and Jim Broome. A great time was had by all and great big thanks to our hosts at the Hard Away Whitworth Hounds!
