Fred E. (French Made's new name) and I preformed at our first dressage show in NC. Dressage shows are kind of snooty so I entered Fred using his registered name, French Made. Dressage measures the harmony between horse and rider. It is a flat class (no jumping) that tests the horse's freedom and regularity of gaits; his desire to move forward in a relaxed but energetic manner; his attention to rider, confidence, focusing mostly on submission (yeah, right) or acceptance of rider aids; and of course the rider's position and correctness of aids. Sounds easy, right? Any of you familiar with OTT (off the track) Thoroughbreds are laughing. However, I am pleased to report, that after 2.5 years of ownership and consistent work, Fred and I achieved the third highest score at the show -- (64.8). There were approximately twenty participants. Fred E. the free loader, no more! He's earned his stay! The judge's final comments were, "A fluid horse with large movement not hindered by his rider... a pleasant test to watch... a nice relationship between horse and rider". Being a psychotherapist, the last comment was the best one for me!
