SOLD! SOLD! SOLD! – Resources for Buying Thoroughbreds

September has been a busy month for us. We have been selling Thoroughbreds to buyers from Vermont, to Georgia, to Montana! Several of the horses we sold, we have also sold their siblings. Over the past 22 years, we have built relationships with breeders, owners, and trainers. They call us to find great homes for the Thoroughbreds they love when they are done racing. This is why we know so much about the horses we sell.

Repeat Buyers

Several of the horses have gone to previous buyers of our Thoroughbreds.

LuckyYou may remember "Lucky" aka JC name Boltoflighting, a 1994 Thoroughbred who came to Bits & Bytes Farm in 2003 at the age of nine. He was purchased by Heather Bonner and lived with her until he passed at 26.

Heather has a young daughter who has become a skilled horsewoman who was looking for her own Thoroughbred. Thoroughbred Twisted Pride and his new ownerHeather reached out to us when she saw Twisted Pride and we were able to tell her about Western Pride babies and how calm they are. Mom purchased Twisted Pride for her. We look forward to lots of updates in the future. Twisted Pride is not too far away from us in the Perry, Georgia area. Maybe we can even meet Heather and her daughter at a hunter pace or horse show.

New Horse at Bits & Bytes Farm

This Masquerade was brought to Bits & Bytes Farm to retrain and sell. We asked you about doing that to see if there was any interest. Many of our followers said they wanted to be able to ride the horse before it was purchased and so we brought in This Masquerade.

Our plan was to document what we do to get a horse ready to be shown to a buyer. Before we could start our post about her being here, several former buyers saw her on our Facebook page and 'dropped in' to say hello and meet the new horse. One of those former buyers was Laura Durham Dixon. She quickly claimed "Miss Maisy" as her horse! We still hope to write that post but we have been kept busy selling Thoroughbreds. Maybe we will find another horse to bring to the farm to train and sell...let us know if we should.

Laura is our most frequent buyer and she fell in love with This Masquerade the minute she saw her. In the past we sold two brothers of this horse -- Near Wigan and Falls Road, so once again we were able to tell the buyer what to expect temperament wise. Laura had already purchased another horse from this breeder, Nearctic Edge a 2009 Thoroughbred, who still lives in Laura's herd of Thoroughbreds, so she knew the quality of this mare. Laura often comes to the farm to join in on our training sessions and fix-a tests. We will have updates on This Masquerade for sure.

New Buyers

Two other Thoroughbreds were purchased by new buyers - Arista Bird and Pear Lemonade.

Arista BirdColleen Morris from Vermont, purchased Arista Bird. She had some things to settle before purchasing her but everything fell into place and now she has a beautiful new Thoroughbred mare in her life. We like thoughtful buyers.

We had another potential buyer put in a special request for a stallion - not something we usually sell but we put the word out and came across a very nice stallion - Pear Lemonade.

Pear Lemonade - a Thoroughbred stallion sold by Bits & Bytes FarmKarson Kluver owns a large ranch near Billings, Montana. He has always worked the ranch using Thoroughbreds as his ranch horses. He now has a fifth generation of Kluvers learning to ride and he needs to keep growing his herd. Karson has seven Thoroughbred mares and some of them are going to be courted by Pear Lemonade next spring. We look forward to lots of baby photos from this gorgeous well bred stallion.

Do Your Research Before Buying

Buying a Thoroughbred in a hurry is not always a good idea. Do your research on both the horse and the seller. You will find a wealth of information about any Thoroughbred if you go to the Jockey Club site www.equibase.com. Be sure to look at all the race charts and auction history as well as the pedigree.

Another good site to use for research is www.pedigreequery.com. Not only can you find the pedigree but you can find the progeny of the dam and sire there. Another fun thing that you can do at this site is to follow the tail-male line all the way back to see which of the three Arab stallions a Thoroughbred goes back to. The way you do this is to click on the horse at the top right of the page. This will take you five generations back following the sire's line. Keep doing this until you reach the end of the line, usually around 1700.

It is not so easy to check the background of the seller, but, Google them and check out their websites and Facebook posts. Bits & Bytes Farm has been finding great homes for Thoroughbreds since 2001. Our website has almost every horse we ever sold still listed on it. You can go to the Archives and see the old HTML pages. We always list who purchased the horse and where they live. We have nothing to hide. We want it to always be a great match and for the horses to find their forever homes.

Before and After the Sale

Bits & Bytes Farm is here to help answer any questions you have about buying a Thoroughbred. We are also here for our buyers of our Thoroughbreds. We have lots of experience and we are happy to share our knowledge with you. If you have any questions, just pick up the phone and call. Texting is so impersonal. If the seller will only text, that is a red flag. We like to know our buyers and they become family.

Sometimes life gets in the way and you need to rehome your Thoroughbred. Bits & Bytes Farm will always help you find a new home for your horse. We will market it on our websites, Facebook page, Instagram, and YouTube channel - FOR FREE. We never take a commission when you sell your horse. We want to be the safety net so that none of the Thoroughbreds we sell end up in a bad situation. If you are in the market for a Thoroughbred, give us a call. We may not have exactly what you are looking for, but it may just pop up like Pear Lemonade did for Karson.
